Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
