EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
